About Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment saves a tooth when the pulp inside it — the nerve and blood supply that run through the centre of the root — has become inflamed or infected. Deep decay, a crack, repeated fillings or a blow to the tooth can all allow bacteria to reach that space. Once they do, the tissue cannot recover on its own, and the alternative to treating it is removing the tooth.

The treatment removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canals inside the root, and seals them so bacteria cannot return. The outside of the tooth stays where it is. That is the point of the procedure: a treated tooth continues to work as part of your bite, keeps the bone around it loaded, and holds its place in the arch — none of which happens once a tooth is taken out.

Root canal treatment is the field of endodontics, and it rewards experience: the canals inside a root are narrow, curved and not always where a textbook says they will be. Two of our clinicians work in this area. Your first appointment establishes whether the pulp is genuinely involved, because not every painful tooth needs a root canal — sometimes the answer is a filling, a bite adjustment or treatment of the gum around it.

What the process usually involves. After an examination and radiographs, the tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic and isolated so the working area stays clean and dry. The pulp chamber is opened, the canals are cleaned and shaped along their full length, and the space is disinfected and then filled and sealed. Some teeth are completed in a single visit; others are treated over two, with a temporary seal in between if infection needs time to settle.

What to expect afterwards. The tooth is usually tender to bite on for a few days, which settles with ordinary pain relief. A back tooth that has had root canal treatment is more brittle than before and often needs a crown to protect it from splitting — that is a separate stage, and we will tell you in advance whether your tooth is likely to need one. A treated tooth can last many years, but it still needs cleaning and check-ups like any other.

Where a crown is also needed, the two stages can usually be planned around a single stay, but that depends on the tooth and has to be confirmed after an examination.

No clinic can promise that every tooth is savable. Some are too broken down or too heavily infected for the result to be predictable, and in that case we will say so plainly and set out the alternatives, including replacement with an implant, rather than treating a tooth that is unlikely to survive.
