A veneer is a thin custom-made facing, usually porcelain, bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Veneers change colour, shape, proportion and the alignment of the visible edge, which is why they are used for teeth that are discoloured in a way whitening cannot reach, chipped or worn at the edge, or slightly out of line.

They are a cosmetic treatment, and they involve a permanent change: preparing a tooth for a veneer normally means removing a layer of enamel, and enamel does not grow back. Once a tooth has been veneered it will always need a veneer or a crown. That is not an argument against the treatment — it is the single most important thing to understand before agreeing to it, and the reason a proper plan starts by asking whether something less invasive would achieve enough.

The most useful thing a clinician can do at a veneer consultation is to be clear about limits. Veneers do not fix gum disease, decay or a bite problem — those are treated first, or the result will not last. They are also not the only route to a better-looking front tooth: whitening or composite bonding may do what you want with far less loss of tooth structure, and significant misalignment is usually better corrected with orthodontic treatment than disguised behind porcelain.

What the process usually involves. Planning comes first: photographs, a shade discussion, and often a mock-up so you can see the proposed shape before any tooth is touched. At the preparation appointment the teeth are shaped, an impression or digital scan is taken, and temporary veneers are fitted. The laboratory makes the final veneers, which are tried in, checked for shade and fit with you looking at them in a mirror, and then bonded. Most cases take two to three appointments.

What to expect afterwards. Some sensitivity to cold in the first weeks is common. Veneers are strong in normal function but they can chip or debond under heavy load, so if you clench or grind you will need a night guard. They do not respond to whitening later, so the shade you choose is the shade you keep — which is why any whitening you want is done before the veneers are made, not after. The gum margin still needs daily cleaning, and the tooth underneath can still decay.

Coming from outside Egypt? Veneer treatment fits a planned visit reasonably well because the laboratory stage takes days, but it should not be rushed. Send photographs and recent radiographs in advance so we can give an honest first opinion on whether veneers are the right answer for what you want changed, and how many visits it would take. Any gum treatment or whitening comes before the veneers, and that affects the schedule.
